the social media site is hoping to offer its initial publishings of stock. and rock 'n' roll legends team up to help america's veterans in need. captioning funded by cbs veterans in need. this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, november 7th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the affordable care act and the word from health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius is expect more bad news. testifying on capitol hill sebelius admitted repairs of the health care website involved a couple of hundred fixes and, quote, we're not where we need to be. one lawmaker asked for a weekly update, and the president heard from angry democratic senators and traveled to texas, the heart of the obama care opposition. tara mergener is in washington. good morning, tara. >> good morning, tara.

the trip to texas was supposed to be just a fund-raising event. instead the president was again trying to make the case for the law insisting no matter how things looked, the website will get fixed and it will be worth the trouble. president obama is trying to win back public support for his signature law. he told a group in texas the affordable care act is still better than what was in place before. >> all the politics, all the chatter, sometimes leaves out the fact that the system we have, the status quo wasn't working for too many people. >> but the failures of healthcare.gov are becoming a p.r. nightmare. >> i started signing up last thursday and i'm almost done. >> carrie underwood and brad paisley opened up last night's country music awards by talking about how health care is unrolling.

>> president obama and senator michael bennett sat down with 15 senators facing re-election next year. they want to delay the signup for health care services. health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius said that's not going to happen. >> for millions of americans, delay is not an option. people's lives depend on this. >> sebelius says the website will be fully functional by the end of the month. and as sebelius talked about progress, an agency official reported more problems yesterday saying the site was slow and that some losers still could not log in. anne-marie? >> tara mergener in washington. thank you, tara. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, twitter makes its public debut and one last rewind for blockbuster. alexis christoforous is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, alexis. >> good morning, anne-marie. big day down here.

twitter stock will begin exchanging stock this morning. it is the most anticipated public offering of the year. twitter has set a price of $26 a share. that values the company at more than $18 billion. twitter currently operates at a loss, but analysts say twitter's best days may lie ahead. >> twitter, which is losing money you would imagine if you believe in the business motto, they're going to be making profit and more of that lies ahead for the investing public that gets in after the ipo. >> now, twitter's ticker symbol will be trading at twtr right over my left shoulder in just a bit. tokyo's nikkei lost nearly 1%. hong kong's hang seng fell half a percent. the commerce department releases its first reading of the third quarter gross domestic product today. it's expected that the economic growth has slowed. meantime the dow opened this morning at another record high.

the dow jones industrial average rose at 128 points beading the report it set on tuesday by 66 points. the nasdaq fell by eight. blockbuster is closing its doors. a victim of digital distribution. the retail renting company is shutting down its 300 remaining stores by early next year and its dvd-by-mail business will be closed by december. dish network bought blockbuster back in 2011. the online streaming service will continue to work. and the seattle coffee giant starbucks says it plans to hire 10,000 vets and military spouses in the next five years. starbucks says the hiring effort is in part a reaction to the high rate of unemployment faced by veterans. it hopes to utilize the vets' unique communication and problem-solving skills. the hiring effort affects stores in the u.s. and, anne-marie, if the deal looks too good to be true, it's probably a computer glitch. certain products on walmart website yesterday were priced ridiculously low or high.

treadmills for $33. computer monitors for 9 bucks. walmart claims a technical error. they said these orders are getting canceled. i'm sure people thought they were getting the deal of a millennium. >> i'm sure they did. alexis christoforous at the new york stock exchange. thank you so much. it's reported that former palestinian leader yasser arafat may have been poisoned with a radioactive substance. he died in 1984 under mysterious circumstances. french doctors said he died of massive stroke but palestinian officials have accused israel of poisoning arafat. last year swiss scientists found traces of a radioactive element, plutonium 210, on some of his belongings. arafat's widow said her husband was the victim of a shocking crime. and at least two people were killed when a gunfight broke out

in a detroit barber shot. in all ten people were shot. witnesses say trouble began when a car pulled up and shotting were fired into the store. the shop is known for gambling incidents. federal agents are investigating a possible link between a los angeles gunman and a conspiracy theory. meanwhile the tsa officer killed in the attack was honored during an airport ceremony. randy paige of our los angeles stage kcbs has more. >> reporter: the water cannons pointed the way as they carried the national honors flag as it carried to a stop at terminal 4. the flag was flown over the rubble at the world wade center after 9/11 was carried from the music in austin, texas, to l.a.x. in honor of the tsa specialist gerardo ismail hernandez who was shot in

terminal 3. >> we lost a great one. i was proud to come to work every day. he worked hard. professional. most portly he was passionate about his job. he loved what he did and showed that each and every day he came to work. >> reporter: the murder of gerardo hernandez has sparked a national debate about security at the tsa checkpoint. some tell us they feel vulnerable in the wake of friday's shooting. >> it's natural for people to be afraid. think in their mind and in talking to officers that, you know, terrorism is meant to instill fear in people and we want our officers to know that it's okay to be afraid or to be scared, but they're going to come back and we're going to continue to do the job that we do every day. >> reporter: a tsa agent cradling the flag in honor of her fellow colleague walked past a long line of fell low agents and carried it to a police car where the motorcade travelled around the airport.

sunshine in dallas, a high of 68. los angeles, partly sunny. in sports the nfl has appointed a special investigator to look into hazing on the miami dolphins team. miami dolphin's incognito has been suspended for threatening martin. martin left the team last week and is undergoing counseling for emotional issues. investigator ted wells will work to determine if o dolphins' coaches or officials knew about or authorized any mistreatment of martin. >> if the review reveals anything that needs to be corrected, we will take all necessary measures to fix it, to ensure that this doesn't happen again. >> there's no timetable on when the report will be finished. in the nba the pacers are still perfect. paul george leads the way for indiana, scoring 21 points while the pacers' bench players combine for a 12-0 run in the

fourth quarter to give indiana the win over chicago. and in hockey, usually the rowdiness is relegated to the ierks but not in last night's game between chicago and winnipeg. watch this. winnipeg's adam pardy gets knocked through the glass. a fan rips the the helmet off his head app puts it on himself. the helmet-swiping fan was escorted out of the arena. he missed the end of the game. it was a 4-1 win for chicago. and it's a good thing cameras were rolling because i don't know how much of that incident he's going to remember. >> a kentucky high school track star gave up the chance to win a meet over the weekend. cody refused to race when she was given the bib number 666. some christians believe that number rents the devil. thacker chose not to run because she did not want to risk her relationship with god.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, d.c., showers today. showers also in atlanta. it will be sunny in st. louis with a high of 54. denver, sunny as well. seattle, windy and rainy. time now for a check of the national forecast. it will be wet today in the east from the gulf coast to new england while a strong wind storm hits the pacific northwest. most of the south will be dry as will the midwest, but heise in the northern plains and lower great lakes will only reach the upper 40s. u.n. climate scientists say the level of carbon dioxide is at a record high and growing fast. as john blackstone reports, no place on the planet is immune. >> reporter: to find the cleanest air on earth we traveled to the south pole.

even there, far from any immediate source of pollution, scientists find increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the air. since our visit five years ago, c o'2 have reached a high since 1988. reaching 394 parts per million last month. high levels of carbon dioxide can create a warming blanket around the earth. the u.n. says the gas is responsible for 80% of the warming effect of the planet's climate. >> the more we ignore the problem, the more we get sea level, increased temperature rises, crop failures. we pay a larger cost to try to address that. >> reporter: is it too late? >> it's not too late to act if we put our minds to it. we have lots of technology and vines and new policy tools available, but we're wasting time. when we know it's a problem, we've got to resolve it.
